BDSM

I am known both regionally and nationally for my clinical expertise on Bondage & Discipline, Dominance & Submission, Sadism & Masochism (BDSM).  I’ve appeared as an expert witness on the subject and am frequently called on by colleagues for consultations in regards to their own clients.  I also teach sexual diversity at the post-graduate level and more specifically, I teach clinicians how to provide sex-positive treatment to members of the kink community.  My doctoral dissertation was “A Psychological Assessment of BDSM Practitioners” and my dissertation chair and academic mentor was Charles Moser, Ph.D., M.D. Dr. Moser is arguably the world’s leading researcher and author on the subject of BDSM, a man who influenced my work greatly.

When it comes to couples and BDSM, I feel enormous compassion for both individuals in the relationship.  There are many different reasons couples seek counseling, however, a scenario I see frequently is where one person is aroused by BDSM and his or her partner is not. My academic and clinical background makes it possible for me to help couples integrate BDSM into their relationship in a collaborative process where both partners feel good about the outcome. I work on a psychological, relational and behavioral level to help partners collaborate, negotiate and communicate within this very complex expression of sexuality.

Here I’m discussing BDSM as the featured guest on “In the Den With Dr. Jenn.”

Please know also that I am not just an academic.  I have hundreds if not thousands of hours of clinical experience counseling BDSM practitioners. Whether you are a top, bottom, switch, master, sub, slave or something else, I will help you on your journey.

Many people travel to Denver from different parts of the country to work with me on BDSM.  If you intend to do that, we can organize extended sessions and help with convenient lodging, etc.

It can be difficult for sexual minorities to find a therapist they are comfortable with for fear of being judged or pathologized.  As a general rule, my practice is too full for me to accept new clients unless the presenting concern is directly related to sexuality.  When it comes to BDSM practitioners and other sexual minorities however, I will provide general psychotherapy for issues not directly related to sexuality. Or if you prefer, I will refer you to a colleague who may not necessarily be a BDSM expert but will be scene friendly.
